Note | Story from Frank Rayner Shepherd's Personal Papers After hearing your program & the poem on Bradford West Bowling it brought to mind when I was a boy of 12 in 1920. I used to go to Bowling Tide held on The spare ground behind the B.D.A. Works. We used to go through the Works from Birch Lane & passed the Boilers which fed the dye works My best friends father was the Head Boiler man. We took water in a Bottle & outside of the building There was a bucket which had some acid in it. We put a stick in & let a couple of drops go into our bottle it was the best lemonade we ever tasted. P There also were small fairs on spare ground behind the Towers Hall In Manchester Road. The ground was flanked & Newton St & Woollon St & Oasis Mill We lived below Tower Hall & my parents had A Drapers Shop there, also there was a larger fairground behind Round Hill St & Rosby St. |
